Replacement of an original lead valley with a new single ply system roof in Southampton

Our client in Shirley Street, Southampton, asked our Bigwood Roofing team to repair a lead valley that had failed in the roof. As the original roof lead was failing in the channel where the two roof slopes meet, there were roof leaks and water management issues occurring which could cause further issues like structural damage and slate tile displacement. Our roofing team stripped the lead valley out and upgraded the roof by installing a new single ply system.

While removing the slates, our team discovered that the felt had deteriorated behind the roof battens. Consequently, we removed both slate sides of the valley and installed a new breathable membrane, treated timber battens, and slates.

Single ply membranes increase a roof valley's watertightness because, unlike lead valleys, there are less weak points and seams due to the membrane's continuous waterproof barrier. The material is also highly flexible which means that any movement between roof slopes is absorbed - especially during extremes in temperature over the year.
